Kingdom of Naples

Don Quixote

The Kingdom of Naples appears briefly in the ending of the embedded tale of Anselmo, Camilla, and Lothario: it is the place where Lothario is reported to have died in battle. News of his death prompts Camilla, already widowed and living in a convent, to take the veil; she dies not long afterward, bringing the tale’s chain of consequences to a close.

Place in the Embedded Tale

The location enters the narrative only in the account of Lothario’s fate. After Anselmo’s death, Lothario leaves and goes to the Kingdom of Naples, where he is killed in a battle. The text supplies no description of the kingdom itself; its significance here is tied to this final report and to the distance separating the surviving characters.

Consequences of the News

Camilla receives news of Lothario’s death while still at the convent. Though Anselmo’s death has left her a widow, this later loss is what leads her to take the veil. She dies shortly afterward, worn down by grief and melancholy. The Kingdom of Naples thus marks the setting of the last event that resolves the embedded story’s tragic sequence.
